Joe Sremack is a managing director in the Data Insights and Forensics practice, based in Los Angeles. Joe leverages more than 20 years of data analytics and technology experience in assisting law firm, corporate, and government clients respond to large-scale data, software development and enterprise systems issues.

Joe brings deep technical understanding and advanced solutions to assist his clients with dispute and investigation matters, by incorporating leading technologies and pragmatic solutions.
Joe applies his technical experience and expertise to advise clients on a variety of issues where data and enterprise systems play a central role. These issues range from U.S. trade enforcement, securities litigation, consumer class action litigation, SEC/CFPB/FinCEN/CMS regulatory compliance and COVID-19-related reporting.

Joe’s client engagements include leading a team of data and system experts in a cross-border monitorship involving U.S. trade regulatory compliance with in-country work in over 50 countries. He developed a visual securities order book simulator to represent billions of historical order book activity records for a securities litigation matter. He has served as an expert in matters involving issues related to IT systems, large-scale data sets and data preservation and production.

Joe served as the technical lead for the review and analysis of over 4,000 IBM mainframe source code files as part of the Bernie Madoff case. He served as the technical lead of performing an end-to-end assessment of a leading mortgage originator’s processes through data sampling and source code review in response to a U.S. regulatory compliance inquiry. He previously worked on the integration of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s agencies’ systems and on behalf of Cisco for performing black-box security testing of its network devices’ microkernel operating system. Joe has also previously served as the head of forensic data analytics at two leading forensic consulting firms and as CTO of a hospitality company.

Joe’s expertise in data analysis and forensics has been featured internationally at academic and industry conferences, and his writing has been appeared in numerous publications, such as IEEE and The Sedona Conference. Joe is the author of Big Data Forensics, the leading compendium on performing data-driven investigations of large-scale systems. He has applied advanced data analysis solutions to dispute and advisory engagements in matters involving GIS data, social media data, health outcome data, and other complex subjects. 

Joe has been recognized by Who’s Who Legal for several consecutive years as a data and e-discovery expert thought leader.

Joe received a Master of Science in computer science from North Carolina State University and a Bachelor of Arts in computer science and philosophy from the College of Wooster. He also holds the Certified Fraud Examiner and Certified Information Systems Auditor certifications.
